Overview:

Jiulong is a special place within western Sichuan. When most people think of western Sichuan they think of high mountains and vast grasslands. Jiulong however is mixed with mountains, valleys, rivers, and one of the most diverse makeups within all of Sichuan province within the confines of its county lines. Visit the otherworldly Wuxuhai, or the Wildman Temple which has imprints of a hand from the unknown wildman that supposedly set the foundations for the temple hundreds of years ago, or enjoy a hike from the town square that overlooks the Yajiang River which runs through the county seed. And if you catch the Ethnic Square on a good weathered night join in on dancing with different Tibetan minorities, Yi, and Han all dancing and spending time having fun together in the central square. If you are a true adventurer ride over high mountains down into the valleys of nearby Sanyanlong or Bawolng villages. Once in Sanyanlong if lucky catch a motorcycle ride up to Changhaizi Lake where you can camp if you dare to make the journey to this gorgeous local scenic lake.

What to Expect in Kangding

Kangding is a vibrant mountain town and the gateway to the Tibetan world, blending Tibetan and Han Chinese cultures. The streets are alive with colorful markets, fluttering prayer flags, and the sounds of rushing rivers. You can explore local temples, discover Tibetan crafts, and savor regional dishes like yak stew and momos.

Surrounded by dramatic peaks, Kangding offers breathtaking views, but its high altitude means the air is thinner; it may take time to acclimate. The weather can change quickly, so pack layers. Kangding is the perfect starting point for your journey, offering a mix of cultural vibrancy and scenic beauty to prepare you for the deeper experiences ahead.

Health and Safety

  • Altitude Awareness: Kangding and Jiagenba are at high altitudes, and you’ll cross passes over 4,000 meters. Be prepared for altitude sickness, which can include headaches, nausea, and fatigue. Stay hydrated, ascend gradually, and consult your doctor about medication like acetazolamide if needed.
  • Weather Preparedness: The weather in mountainous areas can be unpredictable, with sudden rain, wind, or temperature drops. Pack warm, waterproof clothing and dress in layers to adapt to changing conditions.

Travel Essentials

  • Documents: Carry your passport and any required permits. Certain Tibetan regions may require special travel documentation, so verify entry requirements in advance.
  • Cash and Payments: Many remote areas, including Jiagenba, may not have ATMs or accept credit cards. Bring enough cash in the local currency (CNY).
  • Packing Tips: Essential items include sturdy hiking boots, sunscreen, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, and basic first aid supplies. For homestays, small gifts (like snacks or souvenirs) can be a nice gesture of gratitude for your hosts.

Cultural Considerations

  • Respect Local Customs: The Muya Tibetan culture is deeply spiritual. Always ask permission before taking photos of people, religious sites, or rituals. Dress modestly, especially when visiting temples or interacting with locals.
